SYDNEY, May 28.
Before the Royal Commission inquiring into civic affairs, Silas Alaling to-day was under cross-examina-tion hy counsel for a certain Aiderman. He said that Inspector Alaclvay. of the New -South Wales Criminal Investigation Department showed him statements made by Buckle, Albert, and Miss Gordon at the Police Office, Wellington, but lie did not tell witness that he had placed himself within the reach of the law in connection with the Bnbeock-AVilcox contract. What inspector Alaclvay said was that witness was wanted hack in Sydney in connection with Stamp Duties Act. Witness denied that Inspector AlacIvay said anything about a warrant, or that he could take witness hack to Sydney in connection with the stamp duties matter. Witness admitted that he kept AfacKay in ignorance of the fact that he had received £20(10 out of the Babeock-Wilcox contract, and that lie did not alter his statement until lie returned to Sydney and consulted his solicitor. He also admitted telling Inspector AfaeKay that he paid £BOOO to Alderman Green, and that Albert had got the remainder. He also asked Inspector Alaclvay if the latter believed that Albert would handle the transaction without getting something out of it. In reply to a further question, witness said while at Rotorua he received a letter from Albert which advised witness to get out of the country, to leave on a foreign ship, and not on any account to return to Sydney. A letter from Mali tig, while in New Zealand, to his solicitor was then read, in which lie stated that “as I surmised a police officer has been sent to see me about certain matters, and I have now decided to return to my job as I still believe that I will he compelled to return on a trumped up charge.” The letter proceeds to state that he had been informed that Albert had been making highly damaging statements about him. and he suggested that his .solicitor write to Albert, in order to compel him to desist.
