39 DANCERS KILLED. NEW YORK. April 14. The little town of "West Plains. Missouri, staged a tragic dance of death on Friday night, when 39 people were killed and 20 seriously injured as they jazzed to a popular melody. A terrific explosion took place when forty couples were on the floor. A moment of terrible silence followed; then the floor crashed into a raging petrol-fed furnace below.
[ The dance hall was above a gar- ! age. and it is believed that an explosion of petrol caused the tragedy. Tho dead were blown in all directions by tho force of the explosion, hut some of the dancers were blown out of the windows to safety. A fire broke out. hampering by its intense heat, the work of the rescuers. The owner of the garage, who had opened the door to supply a motorist with petrol, was found some distance away with the door knob still in his hand. Tho motorist has not been found.
