SERIOUS ACCIDENT

AT RLMU DREDGE. A serious accident happened on Sunday morning about 9 o’clock .‘it the Rimu Dredging Company’s dredge, resulting in Mr Fred. -McCarthy of Gibson Quay, an employee, receiving very severe injuries.

It appears several men were at work engaged in removing a beam, and it was. decided to leave two holts in to swing it by. When the third bolt was released the beam fell with a crash, and it was found that both of the other two holts had been previously broken.

The beam in falling struck Mr McCarthy, inflicting grievous wounds. Ho was struck on the forehead, the flesh being torn away on both sides, leaving the skull showing, while in addition to injuries his collarbone was fractured and his right thigh broken. Medical aid was at once summoned and on arrival Dr Baird alter giving first aid ordered the sufferer’s removal to the hospital where his injuries received every possible attention. On enquiry at the hospital this morning we learned that the condition of the patient was very satisfactory under the special conditions of his injuries.
