In flic Shniul income tax case, Air Terry, who appeared for Sliand said that he must admit that the returns, as rendered, were incorrect. However, they were .not wilfully rendered so. At most they were negligently rendered. STiand did not wilfully perpetrate a fraud upon the Taxation Department. He was an efficient baker, and thrifty, but his knowledge of accountancy was both elementary and rudimentary. Sliand, in bis ignorance, thought that he had only to make a return of bis income from the business after deducting the expenses. His wife had money in the business. She was really a partner. and the defendant did not consider he was bound to return particulars of private returns.
“Well, I am going to convict this man,” said Magistrate Hunt. “It is a case of downright impudence. Why, in one year he showed his income to be £-106, whereas it was shown to have been over £I2OO. He has been getting out of paying bis taxation, and be lias been drawing money out and putting it in bis pocket. Sliand will lie fined £25 and costs on each of the five charges. That will make people ho honest in their returns.” WOMAN FATALLY HURT.

CHRISTCHURCH, Alay 20.
In fining two employees of a contractor for cruelty to horses, the Magistrate, Air Orr-Walker, said: “I think tho employer should be more heavily punished than his employees. Tt is peculiar that the charges were laid against tho men. I wonder what a man would do if lie had a sore hand. Ho would probably stay away from work, demand his wages and take good care of himself, but when it is a poor dumb animal which is injured, it is driven and forced to work in a dastardly manner.” FIRE 'IRACEDY. HAAVF.ItA., May 20.
There arc no additional facts concerning the tragedy which overwhelmed the W oiler family early yesterday morning in their lonely cottage at Ararata. The .bodies of the victims were brought to town during.the- day, the funeral taking place this afternoon .
The cause of the fire is unknown. I t is difficult to explain the position of the father’s body in the kitchen, unless, as suggested, lie got up to make a cup of tea as was his custom. The kitchen stove is encased in an iron chimney. This and' the kerosene lamp seem the only likely sources of an outbreak, but all the matter is conjecture.
