“One siiill' of cyanide and an opossum turns up its heels,” said a Wellington trapper who deprecated such a wav of kilims' this valuable fum’d animal. “This method is not favoured by the regular trapper, hut it is not unusual to find a district cleaned out in such a way by the poacher. The trapper does not kill by this means, as cyanide is so deadly that it will get the whole of the lu-ood down to the smallest, whilst the usual method of trapping does not clean out a disriet. The method of the cyanide poisoner is well known. He will smear some on a chip of wood, and place icing sugar on the same chip. Ihe opossum is the most intpiisitive animal known to the hush. A new chip of wood of something untoward, so he investigates, takes a lick of it, sniffs, and it is all over. Others want to see what all the trouble is about, and they, in turn, repeat the performance so that a few chips of wood treated in this manner might he the cause of death to some dozens of opossums. This form of poisoning has. it is understood, been practised recently in the bush lands surrounding Wellington. If it is not put down with a stern hand the opossum may disappear from, the district just when it promises to be a product of considerable value.” Woods’ Great peppermint 3ure For Coughs and Colds, never fails.
