CHINESE TROUBLE
Australian Press Assn.—United Service CHANG’S DECISION. (Deceived this day at 8.50 a.m.) SHANGHAI, May 23. The dictator, (Tiangtsolin’s announcement of his determination to stand and fight the Southerners lias seemingly altered the complexion of northern affairs and considerably alleviated the panic in Peking and Tientsin. It also has caused tTic Southerners to readjust their plans. Reports from the north state the Southerners are meeting stubborn resistance at points where they have clashed with the Northerners.
Feiigyuhsiang’s forces flanking, necessitated a slight Northern retreat, otherwise the battle lines are unchanged. It is rumoured Changtsolin has made overtures to Shansi, Governor of Yeiihsilian, offering Pekin in return for nil alliance against the South, confirming the general belief that without assistance, Changtsolin is doomed.
