A REMAND. HAMILTON. May 22. The press was asked to suppress the name of an elderly Pahiatua man who appeared before Mr Platts, S.M. today-, charged with attempting to leave his wife unsupported, ho intending to leave New Zealand. His arrest was made oil a warrant from Pahiatua. Counsel for the accused said that he was a Justice of the Peace, and a man of considerable wealth. He was separated from bis wife, and paid her £•1 10s per week, and his unmarried daughter £2. He had remitted the sums regularly. Counsel thought that these facts would convince the Bench that the suspicions were groundless. The Magistrate granted a. remand to Pahiatua.
FARMERS’ COMPLAINT. HAMILTON. May 22.
Mr A. A. Ross, in a Presidential address to the Auckland Provincial Farmers’ Conference, said that the farmers are finding it more and more difficult to make ends meet, despite their high production and their good prices. He quoted a Canterbury College bulletin no .showing that the values of exported goods, in the terms of New Zealand general prices during the past seven years were 12 per cent, below the year 1914. He also cited the heavy burden of rates and taxes and the high .interest charges. It was no wonder, lie said, that settlement has come to a standstill. Many men had to walk off their farms. The root cause was that the producer for export was the only mint working under competition. He demanded “a radical reform in our economic system.”

About three miles outside the harbour entrance before daylight this morning, the auxiliary schooner To Amlin collided ivith and sank a fishing launch, owned by G. A. Thompson. One of the three occupants, a you Hi named Galey, was drowned.
SALE OF SATRAP. WELLINGTON. May 22
Mr T. S'. Roulston. who Inis negotiated the sale of Satrap states that only now has the sale .been finally confirmed by cable from Australia. He has announced that Satrap has been purchased by a. Queenslander at a substantial four figure price, and that the horse leaves Wellington by the Maungaiiui on Friday, in charge of Mr H. Duggan.
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ALARM CARTERTON. Mav 23.
I'Yatherston Chamber of Commerce passeti the following resolution last-meeting:—-‘'That this Chamber views with the greatest concern the growing immorality of the present day and calls on all proprietors and custodians of halls to exercise the greatest care to ensure the safety of young girls.”
A. number of members spoke strongly expressing the greatest alarm at the present day trend of events. Short skirts, drinking at dances, motor cars, and lack of parental control were amongst the tilings cited as causes of the present day state of affairs.
TRAM HEADLIGHTS. PALMERSTON X., May 23
The (.'haniher of Commerce decided to make representations to the Railway Department regarding the alleged dimness of headlights on express trains one member staling the lights wore often mistaken for town lights. Cases occurred where motorists were almost on crossings before they realised a train was approaching.
POLITICAL. DUNEDIN, May 23
In reference to the United Party statement that 11. E. Moller. was selected to contest Dunedin Central, Mr Muller states he has no intention of standing against Sir C. E. Statham. Moreover, if he does stand, which is unlikely, it will he as a Liberal. J. Loudon also denies he is definitely committed to contest the Dunedin West seat for the United Party. CHRISTCHURCH, May 23.
Rev. J. Iv. Archer (Mayor of Christchurch) definitely will contest Christchurch North seat as a Labour candidate.

A serious collision between a motorcycle and a horse-drawn waggon took place at Ruawni hist night, resulting in the death at Tehopuru hospital of the rider of tlie motor-cycle, Robert Raff, a pubic works foreman. Bail, accompanied by a man, Harry A\ allace, was proceeding along the road when the collision took place, Bnff sustaining a compound fracture of tlie leg and other injuries. He was conveyed to the hospital where he succumbed early this morning. Wallace escaped with a few bruises while L. Anibury, the driver of the waggon, was unhurt. A COURT SENTENCE. PALMERSTON'N., May 23. the Police Court. Henry Roland Barr a labourer. 24. pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence for breaking and entering the dwelling of Thomas Young at Fit/.herbert and stealing articles valued at £3 Us; also breaking a,u ’ entering the dwelling of Mrs Avery at Palmerston North and stealing articles valued at £2 2s 6d; also breaking and entering .the dwelling of Miss McHogan at Palmerston North, and stealing 4s in money. Accused pleaded not guilty to an act of indecency at Fitzherbert with the intention of offending a female. He was sentenced to three months hard I labour. COUKTY , g RESOLUTION. PALMERSTON N., May 23. Kairnga County Council resolutioned that a remit to the Counties Conference that an endeavour be made to induce the Government to subsidise hospital boards on a more liberal and equitable basis.
