COOKS’ STRIKE
CONFERENCE WITH OAYNERS. (Australian Press Association.) MELBOURNE, May 21. In response to a further request from the Austral a sign Council of Trades Unions for a conference to discuss the cooks’ strike, tho ship owners replied, granting the request, but stating that they liavo already announced the terms on winch a settlement is possible, and that there can be no compromise on this matter, as those terms embody a vital principle; but if, knowing this, the- Council still wishes to meet the owners in conference, the latter, as a matter of courtesy, will not refuse. At the conclusion of the Marine Cooks’ meeting, Air Tudehopc (Secretary! announced that the meeting had unanimously reaffirmed the attitude of Hi" union that it would not tolerate llio Australasian Council of Trades Unions’ interference in the dispute without the consent of the union. The strike position is thus unchanged. MELBOURNE, Afay 20. A conference between the executive of the Australasian Council of Trades Unions and representatives of the marine unions and the shipowners, lias commenced, hut, so far, it lias not reached a basis for a settlement of the dispute.
