CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.
A meeting of tho Canterbury Education Board was held at Christchurch on Friday, and was attended by Messrs C. S. Thomson (chairman), W. A. Banks, J. Maze, TV. IT. Winsor, J. Gow, IV. Johnson, Tt. H. Wild, T. Hughes, and W. P. Spencer. Appointments confirmed included Blackpool, Mr H. F. North (assistant). Resignations accepted included Wallace Siding, Miss E. D. Butler, sole teacher. It was reported that the balancesheet had been received b 4 y the board, which decided to hold over tho question until the financial statement had been audited. June 18 was fixed as the date for tho setting up of committees in those twenty-two districts in which there had been no committees Formed.
An allegation that the meeting of llewanui (West Coast) householders to elect a school committee had been held on a Sunday, and was therefore illegal, was made in a letter received. The chairman (Mr C. S. Thompson): Have we any proof that it was on a Sunday? “ A lot of things are done on Sunday on the Coast,” remarked a member. The letter was held over pending the obtaining of a report on the matter. Mr J. A. Valentine, an ex-school inspector for Taranaki, has been appoint-j ed to attend, as a representative of the Canterbury Education Hoard, the Teachers’ Conference in London in July. Mr Valentine is at present on a trip to England.
