CHINESE FIGHTING. Australian Press Assn.—United Service (Received tliis day at 9.30 a.in). SHANGHAI, -May 20. Northerners, fighting with their backs to the wall were defeated in the initial engagement with the combined forces of- the Southern allies, and following a drive launched at Wangtu yesterday arc retreating. Three armies are assaulting the Northern defences, namely, Nationalists, commanded by Chiang Kai-Shek, Knominchun, commanded by Fengyubsiang (the so-called Christian General), and Slian.si-ites, commanded by Yensliibsan. Governor of Snansi Province, attacking 4’rom three sides, compelling the Northerners to shorten their lines and fall hack twenty miles nearer Peking.
