At mi inquest held at Westport on Friday, before Air K. R. Fox, Coroner, touching the'death of Air W. H . Kilner, the Coroner said that, following thf evidence, there appeared to be no negligence upon the part of anybody. The deceased was trespassing in the railway yard. His verdict was that deceased, while in a state of mental depression; committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a rake of trucks in the railway yard.
The death occurred at Wnipukurau, Hawke’s Bay, on Thursday last of Air W. J. O’Donnell, formerly Grcymouth Borough Engineer. The deceased, who was a native of Dublin, Irelano, held the position of Bzrougli Engineer for about 1/i.glit years, being appointed in i 913. lie resigned owing to ill health. He leaves a grown-up family >f two sons and daughters, lie was a veteran of the Maori War, and was over 70 years of age.
The wedding of Air Leslie James AfcKendrv, of Westport, to Miss Edith Elinor, second daughter of ATrs E. Haste, High Street, Grey mo nth, was celebrated at Holy Trinity Cliurefli, Grcymouth on Saturday morning by Archdeacon Carr. The bride, Who was attired in a frock of cream georgette and taffeta, with coronet and veil, and carried a bouquet cf cream and blue delphiniums, was attended by her sister, Miss AI. Haste, who wore a frock of pals green velvet with silver trimming. Air F. O’Brien was best mail.
Afenibers of the Canterbury Education Board attended a private .screening on Thursday night of the first series of films intended for exhibition to .school children, and at yesterday’s meeting, spoke enthusiastically of the quality of the films.' “They will be of immense value to education in this district,” .said the chairman of the board (Air C. S. Thompson). Air R. H. Wild stated that lie was opposed to any pictures screened outside the control of educational authorities, but through the inability of the latter to screen them, lie was in accord with the scheme. He had seen the pictures, and approved of them. The films, arrangements for which are in the hands of Air H. Gladstone Hill, will he shown in the Afunicipal Concert Hall.
With a view to forming a Literary and Debating Club, a meeting was held in St. Mary’s Club Rooms last evening, and the result was a highly satisfactory one. There was a good attendance of young men present, who showed much enthusiasm with regard to flic desired project. The Chairman explained the benefits to be derived from .such a society and said he felt sure it would be a success from all points of view. A Literary and Debating Club is indeed a beneficial asset to any community, and by its formation the art of public spanking is developed and much talent which would otherwise have remained hidden is brought to the fore. It was decided that the Club meet weekly on Alonday evening at 7.30 o’clock. To-night be the opening, when impromptu speeches will he delivered.
