AMUSEMENTS.

EVERYBQDYS PICTURES. “ A HERO ON HORSEBACK ” -TO-NIGHT. Hoot Gibson lives up to the stirring title of his latest Universal-Jewel I'estern, “A. Hero on Horseback,” the screen version of Peter B. Kyne’s ” Bread Upon the Waters,” which is the top spot at the Princess Theatre tonight. Exceptionally well directed, the picture gets away from the usual theme and the routine action oi' most Western lilms and strikes out aiong a new path with n plausible plot, well-hula need melodrama, and human-interest appeal. Gibson again demonstrates that he has a flair for comedy to set off his more spectacular performance astride swiftly galloping mustangs and dexterity with his side arms. Bert and vivacious, titian-hnired Ethlyne Clair makes her entrance into the ranks of the featured feminine screen players, in her role as the heroine of “A Hero on Horseback.” Although Hiss Clair has been in pictures for a brief two years, she has made amazing progress from the comedy field, ami this picture should mark the beginning of an auspicious lutiire in more important roles. 'I he action and plot of the picture revolve around the adventures of a happy-go-lucky, native son of a gun of the land ol cactus, cattle and Lowboys, who, through continuous wooing ol the goddess of chance finds himself reduced to a financial condition as hare ol money as a snake is of hips, if is adventures in emerging from a condition of rags to the silks of riches provide the maximum of hilarity and plenty of riding and fighting to a hair-raising climax. Del Andrews directed the picture and Arthur Stutter and Alary Alice Scully collaborated on its adaptation to the screen. A topical, comedy and further chapters of the serial will also be shown tonight. On Saturday James Kirkwood and Lila Lee will lie seen in “Love’s Whirlpool.”
