When the National Industrial Conference resumed to-day, a report was submitted by the special committee to the effect that it had been impossible to arrive at a unanimous recommendation in regard to the I.C. and A. Act. A vital point of difference between the parties was the question' of optional or coimpulsoi'y reference of disputes to a court or other tribunal foi final settlement, employers favouring the optional system and employees wishing to maintain the present system of compulsion. Each side submitted a statement setting out a. proposed amendment to the Act. Employers urged that provision should be made for third party representation, and that disputes should he only referred to a court from the Conciliation Ckrnne.il* if the majority of assessors favoured that course. Provision is asked for a system of piecework or contract payments in place of under time payments. Employees in their proposals also favoured third party representation with limitations. They urged that where it was possible to arrive at conclusions in the Conciliation Council, wages and hours should be referred to a court, other matters to be dea.lt with by an industrial committee. Tn ease of possible strikes ami lockouts, it is asked that there should be a provision for reference of matters in d ispute to the National Disputes Committee.

A liberal reduction in the price of petrol lias been secured for financial members of the Canterbury Automobile Association. Within the next week full information will be published regarding the scheme. It is for a term extending till 1932. First-class petrol will lie available from bowsers for members of the -West: Coast, Ashburton and other country members will be provided for.

It is understood that an arrangement lias been made independently of companies which supply the bulk of petrol at present.
