The Timaru Hospital authorities reported on Tuesday night that the condition of Mr F. W. Newbegin is improving satisfactorily. Mr New begin is a farmer of l’areera West, who was yarding a bull at Smitblield on Sunday afteriiouii. and was attacked by the animal and tossed bodily three times. He escaped serious hurt, but was injured about the legs, the result of being caught on a barbed wire feme en which the hull had tossed him. Air Newlicgin was admitted to hospital on Sunday evening. The Soldiers’ Hall last evening pie seined a gay spectacle when the annua hall of the Hibernian Society look place. A large crowd attended am from the start to the finish dancin;: went with a lively swing. The scene, together with the deeoiations. and til: bright lights mingling with the multicolon red frocks of the ladies, presented a very animated picture. During the evening the Grand .March was held. The music by floss’ Orchestra was excellent, the manner in which they treated the different pieces was very efficient and many were the encores called for by the dancers. The supper catering was most fittingly carried out, and to the ladies concerned great praise is dttc lor t heir generous efforts. Mr F. Groufsky j uiir. acted as M.C., and the manner in which he acted in this capacity war most creditable. At the Westland Land Hoard meeting after the discussion on another application which is referred to elsewhere, there were another two applications made for river frontage areas, this time the /■ location being the Big Wanganui river. In these instances the applicants were the holders of the areas fronting the river, and who at present hold portion of the frontage. The oilier portion of the frontage had been declined to he taken tin hv the previous holders oi these sections some twentv years ago, and with their approval, what was barren, stony Leach, had been taken up l>,v the present holder. By his efforts during that period the area had been considerably improved. and now was fairly good sheep country. The present holder, the veteran “.Jock” objected to the application being granted which would mean his losing these areas, and in a spirited address to the Board he emphasised how he had, unaided, l>y his own work, ■'with these hands” dramatically spreading them above the Board table, had toiled and improved the section till now it was coveted by others. After emmsel for 'applicants and objector bad both placed the position before the Board from their clients’ standpoint, the Board decided to follow the course agreed upon some ten years ago-, when a .similar application for the /same ground had been made, and to continue to leave, us one member of the Board stated, a worthy old settler in possession of ground, that he had taken and improved when adjacent owners had declined to make use of it. ■
