At Court to-day. John Edward Prebble, aged 37. charged with unlawfully assaulting Colin McDonald, was fined £l2, in default one month, half the amount to go to .McDonald. The case was a sequel to a dispute while the men were building a bouse. Accused resented some remarks by McDonald and hit him four Mows on the head with a hammer. The Magistrate (Mr Mosley) said—“ You may think yourself lucky that you did not hit -McDonald on another part of the head. Then you may have had to face a much more serious charge.”

VERDICT OF SUICIDE. AUCKLAND, May 14

A verdict of suicide while in a state of mental depression was returned by Mr Hunt in connection with the death of Mrs Ethel red a Chaplin. 31. of Great Smith Road, Ellerslie, found in the kitchen yesterday with a gas tube in her mouth and an overcoat across her head.
