Tnu information supplied through Mr Seddon Nf.P. to-day in regard to important works in South Westland, indicates how alert the .Member has been in reference to the special requirements of the district at this juncture. The Government appears to lie handling the general situation in .a comprehensive wav. It is to be regretted that there has been so much serious Jlood damage. The expenditure under that heading is estimated at £l.lOO. which is to go merely in restoration work replacing roads and bridges destroyed by flood and slips. So large a sum would have gone a long way in entirely new works had the result of tho storm damage not been so extensive. However, despite that aspect. Mr ..Seddon is able to enumerate a list of new works which as lie says, indicates that the authorities are giving special attention to the district. It is fortunate, indeed, that the representations have been so .successful. as the various works referred to are all required and necessary. It would appear that within a year to eighteen months' the demand for bridges on the main smith highway will be a request of the past, as with the programme mapped out, it appears to be the intention to push through the bridges as rapidly as the construction work can be done. The visit of •the Main Highways Board has certainly done good in regard to the pressing needs of South Westland, and it is highly satisfactory that (lie iu-lire of the claims made in the past have now been finally recognised. The Hoard and the Government alike, not only deserve the thanks of Mr Seddon in the matters referred bo, but also the thanks of tile community which should heartily appreciate what is being done in such a comprehensive" way in South Wtestlnnd.
