MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT
“Voting in municipal elections is pot much fun,” says the Txmdoii “Evening Standard.” “The issues, though lint small, are obscure. They refer to matters which Hie ordinary man would much prefer, if he could, to have settled for him by some com. mon-sense person without his being consulted. The effort to understand wliat is going oil and the claims of the rival parties would make too large a demand on his time. He does not mind sparing .some of bis leisure for the wider and more exciting issues of national politics. There, too, he feels that, in voting lie has perhaps helped to create a great man. But when he i.s asked to give lii-s mind to deciding whether Air Smith or Air .Tones i.s to look after his trams and his street lighting for him. he fee’s much as he- would if his wife called on him to decide which of two sorts of platepolish the housewife ought to use. So long a.s the plate i.s properly polished, it i.s not his business, and he does not. care. The municipal councillor is to him a mere convenience, which ought to ho provided without so much fuss.
