SEA COOKS’ DISPUTE. SYDNEY, May 9
The striking cooks defied the owners’ ultimatum that the ships must he manned by to-day. When a call was made for a .butcher for the Knnownn, which is at present under the HuddartParker Company’s control, there was no response.

The Chairman of the Commonwealth Steamship Owners’ Association stated that the prospects for a settlement of the cooks’ dispute arc not bright, as it was known that the Sydney branch of the Union had been instructed not to supply a butcher for the Knnownn, the whole crew of which would he paid off, and the vessel laid up.
SETTLEMENT MOVE. AfELBOUBNE, May 9
A. conference of the maritime organisations and Trades Hall Disputes Committee, after discussing the cooks’ dispute, referred the matter to the Australasian Council of Trades Unions. Further secret negotiations then took place, and it is now considered likely that the cooks will be instructed to resume work, or, alternatively, not to extend the dispute, and also give the Council ail opportunity of intervening.
