ABORTION CHARGE
AGAINST A DOCTOR

The trial of Joseph Patrick Hennessy, medical practitioner, of having unlawfully used an instrument on a woman with intent to procure a miscarriage, opened in the Supreme Court to-day, Air Justice Reed being on the Bench.
Before proceeding with the hearing the Judge directed that the names of the two principal witnesses, either in the evidence or in the N indictment, should hot be published, nor any reference made to their respective occupations or place of residence, nor of any matter that might point to their identity.
An order was -also made clearing the Court. , Evidence is proceeding on the lines of that given in the Lower Court. In answer to AH' Finger, the girl concerned ,in the case said she "as considerably upset when taken to the. police station and asked to make « statement. She did, not remember any actual threat, hut Detective AlcLennan said the best thing for her was to make the statement. She made the statement because she did not know how much they knew. Detective McLennan said: “We know all about you; it’s no rise you trying to bluff us.” AlcLerinrm also said that if she gave truthful, evidence at the trial, tho police would suggest she lie pardoned Tor any part she had taken. She was to be given an indemnity. The principal male witness said that tho two detectives called at his house at 2.30 in the morning. They had a typewriter and two electric torches. It was a surprise, and not a very pleasant one. One torch illuminated the paper,' the other the typewriter. 1- >• was suggested that if he did not make a statement lie would be put in U>e dock. He bad since received an indemnity against prosecution.
