WEST COAST STREAMS

13HTIXJi.ES to be erected. 1 CHBrSTCTTCR.CH. May 8. At the last meeting c.£ the executive of the Canterbury Progress - League, Mr H. W. Hcslop, who recently visited South Westland, .stressed the necessity for,-bridging several of the smaller streams on the road to the Franz Josef Glacier. As a result of his representations, the Highways Board was approached, and in a letter received by Mr P. R.. Climie, organiser of the League, from the chairman of the Board (Mr F. W. Furkert) it was stated that the importance of bridging these streams was fully recognised by the Board and that steps were already being taken in that direction. Most of the material for a bridge over SI a toy Creek, which was regarded as the worst unbridged stream on the road, was on the ground, and it was anticipated that the bridge would ho completed within a few .months. When the Board recently visited the West Coast instructions were given to have the necessary surveys mr.de in respect of MeCullogh's and McDonald's Creeks, and the work was to be undertaken at once with the object of having the bridges erected during the current year. .In regard to the remaining streams, the. Board was not in the position to indicate whether it had sufficient funds available for the erection of bridges over them within the present financial year, hut it was its desire to bridge as many as possible. The League regards the reply as being in the circumstances very satisfactory, an<l is of the opinion that it shows the desire of the Board in a practical way to remove the remaining barriers to tourist traffic to the Glacier.
