A sentence of four months’ imprisonment was imposed on Henry Devoreaux, engineer. 31, on a charge of stealing scrap lead and copper, valued at til 10s lid. the property of the P. and T. Department. The Magistrate said that he had given the case full consideration, and had come to the conclusion that it was Inot one in which the benefit of probation could be extended. The case was heard last week. The thefts extended over a period of a year. Counsel stated that Devereaux had looked on the scrap metal in the light of perquisite, and sought leniency for his client.

Green, ot Rahotu. as a candidate to contest the seat in the interests of the party, hut willin'- to withdraw in favour of any selected candidate. The meeting unanimously favoured C. A. Wilkinson as the representative in the party’s interests. Wilkinson gave a non-com-mittal reply, stating that if ho accepted nomination it would he as an independent. The meeting elected a strong Eltham Committee and decided on the organisation of the electorate and postponed the selection of a candidate until a further mooting in Eltham in a month s time. ______
