hi the Commons in answer to a question, Hon. A incry said a commissioner had been appointed to impure into the murders in Solomon Islands. Hi' was due there on June 27th. Sir. Joyuson Hicks in answer to a series of questions, said lie realised the Hyde Park case raised a grave issue into which he was fully inquiring. Referring to the general question ol police procedure he would show cases to the coin in it tee now inquiring into street offences. He and the Police Commissioner were considering whether to bold a court of enquiry on whether the officers concerned were guilty ol perjury. in which case it would be a matter for another court.
Mr Davidson—‘.'Why use plainclothes instead of uniformed constables? Is the police object to censor public morals or merely to prevent: annoyance to people using the park.
Sir Joyuson flicks—-Nintecn nut of twenty Hyde Park police arc not uniformed. ft is not a question of morals it is the police’s bounden duty to see the public parks; are not used in such a wav as to he an olloncc and a disgrace. Mr Snowden at the report stage of the Equal Franchise Bill, moved an amendment to abolish all plural voting, instead of giving it to propertied women as well a.s men.
Sir Joyuson Hicks: “fl we "inmaking an electoral amcmlim.'iil ii might lie reasonable. The Bill simply gave women a. vote on the same leini* as men. 'Hie plural voters would only be -150,000 out of twenty-live millions. The amendment was defeated by ?K> to 78.
Mr Kennedy moved further to reduce the maximum a candidate could spend on n> city borough election.
