Itegarding statements made in tin Soutli Island that the netting of quinnut salmon by the Marine Department and the issue of private netting license.* was somewhat premature in view of tin. fact that salmon were still becoming established. The Department must consider the utilisation of fishing for the general good of the public. The death at the age ol <SG o.| .Mrs Mary McCarthy, an old resident ol Wellington, took place on Thursday morning last at her residence. Boulcott street. Mrs McCarthy lived on the West Coast with her first husband. At the Magistrate’s Court, Gro.vinotith, yesterday, James Finer appeared before Mr Meldrum. S.M., on a charge of ill-treating a cat belonging to James Simpson, by wounding it with a rifle. Defendant was represented by Mr Joyce. Senior Sergeant Roach, in outlining the case for the prosecution, stated that Simpson owned a cat which had gone into defendant's hack yard. When it returned it was very sick and appeared as if it were going to die. hut it recovered. After hearing evidence the -Magistrate said that according to the evidence the cat was moving around the magpie and defendant was afraid it would he destroyed; There was no evidence as to it having worried the chickens. , If defendant had only driven the cat away, his action might have been excused, but he had no right to shoot it. The Magistrate quoted n case in which a gamekeeper had shot a dog in order to preserve a hare. It was a question whether the tlog deserved the penalty of death for running across the ground. it was then held that the gainekeper was not right in doing so, merely to preserve the hare. In the case before hint it was not necessary to shoot the eat to save the magpie. If defendant had gone after the cat. no doubt it would have cleared out, hut by taking up a gun and deliberately shooting it. he had committed an offence. Defendant would be fined £2 with costs amounting to £1 4s.
