WELLINGTON, -May 3. In nnnounving alterations ill the
■sonnei of the railway management
to-day,' Mr Coates indicated that very important changes in the system of management- which has been in
operation since 1022. The system ol general manager administration previously in operation is to be reverted
to on the retirement oT the present members of the Railway Board, at the end of this month, and the position of general manager is then to bo assumed by Mr H. IT. sterling, for'merlv tv member of the Hoard, WELLINGTON. May 3. Mr Coal c<, in bis statement, added: It lias been apparent, to the Government for sonic 1 time that the commercial aspect of the railways had assumed such imixirtuNc-e' as to render if exceedingly desirable to secure the services el liirn with outside eemmereial training when the time came to make fresh appointments U> the management. The recent retirement of Mr .Tones, the Heard Chairman, on account o! ill-lien till, created such a position. and it was felt that every often t should he made to secure the services of a. fully qualified railway man with first class commercial training. Mr Mount, one of the Hoard members, had all-each- asked to he allowed to retire
o,n superannuation, and this has been agreed to. The. importance! of the Government's policy was fully realised b\ the remaining member. Air Alasnn, who had expressed his willingness to meet
the Government in securing the interests of the servile, and lie has also been permitted to retire o.n superannuation. It will be necessary to make temporary arrangements till such time
as the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Coy. could see its way clear to release Air Sterling, hut he will bo consulted on all questions of administration in the interim.
Another important change tin ho
given effect to. he said, was the doing away with (lie position of a liaison officer in the .Minister's office, and the occupant of the post. Mr J. S. Tluntoi, has been transfercil to a somewhat similar office attached to the General .Manager.
