(By Telegraph—Per Press Association. LIBEL ACTION. ELTHAAI, .May 2. ’The hearing of a case of alleged libel, G. 11. P. Fitzgerald v. Blundell Bros., Limited, and New Zealand Dairyman, commenced at the Maigstrate’s Court yesterday before Mr Tate, S.M. The plaintiff is manager of New - Zeeland Co-operative Rennet Company, rennet manufacturers, Eltliam, and claims £250 damages against defendants jointly and severally as printers and publishers, in respect to certain statements contained in an issue of the “Dairyman ” of February 20th., 1928, alleging inferiority of the standard in the company’s product in comparison with that produced by overseas competitors and lack of scientific knowledge and facilities by plaintiff. The case occupied all dav and decision was reserved.
-MINERS FINED. WESTPORT, May 2. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, 338 miners were proceeded against by the Inspector of Awards for abroach of the Labour Disputes Investigation Act, an illegal strike, and were fined an aggregate of £159 10s, plus costs.
FOUND SHOT. AUCKLAND, Slay 2. Alfred Conway Gray, aged 27. single, son of William Gray, of Martinborough, employed on a farm at Papakura, was found'shot in a but early this morning with an old muzzle-loading rille alongside.
RADIO LICENSES. WELLINGTON, May 1. 'The following table gives the wireyear at March 31st. the number of licenses received at headquarters to April 30th. this year and the numiber not yet received:

At April 30th. SOS dealers’ licenses had been taken out. leaving a deficiency of 829 against last year’s 1727 licenses.
THE C A LARSEN. DUNEDIN. May 1
Stevenson and Cook, of Port Chalmers. have secured the contract for the repairs to the whaler C. A. Larsen at £IO,OOO. Most of the work will he temporary, the only permanent part being the repairing of extensive. holes at the bow. Ihe work is to be completed in three weeks. One hundred and fifty men will be working day and night in shifts. The vessel then goes to Norway for permanent repairs.

Mr Walter Seavill. slice]) farmer, of Waingaro. was selected by the Reform Party delegates of the Raglan electorate. at Ngaruawaliia. this afternoon, as the Party’s candidate for the General Election. Mr Seavill has been a member of the County Council, Hospital Board, and on the Absentee Soldiers’ Board. .
PRISON ESCAPEE ARRESTED. MASTERTON. May 2. Samuel Arthur Pudne.v. alias Ted Smith, alias Jones, appeared before Air E. G. Eton, J.P., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, on a charge of escaping from Auckland Prison on Deco miter sth. 1926. Accused was remanded to appear at Wellington on Friday. He was arrested early In the day at. Afataikona Station, some miles from Afasterton. where he was engaged in fencing.
It is reported that lie escaped from the prison at about eight o’clock, and made his way to Taumarnnui, travelling at night-time along along the railway line. About five months ngpi the accused came to the AYairnrnpn district. He was serving n term of two years’ imprisonment for false pretences when he escaped
DEATH FROAI GAS. CHRISTCHURCH, May 2. AVing Soon, a Chinese laundryman. was found dead in bed in his place of I'.'.sidenco at Maneliesl'er Sti'eet 'today. The cause'of death was gas poisoning. the gas having come from a laundrv iron.
At the inquest this afternoon, Afr Afosley, S.AL. said that death was due to suffocation by gas. but there was no evidence to show if death was accidental or otherwise.
FARMER'S DEATH. ACCIDENT IN STABLE. CHRISTCHURCH. Alav 2. AA'liib' clipping a horse to-day. John .Addington AA’ells. farmer, of A'iewhill. Oxford, suffered fatal injuries bv having his bead crushed against the side of the stall. The horse reared and came down, trapping AA'ells and (•ru'iV ing his head hndlv. AA'ells got out of the stall, and remarked that his head was sore, but lie went about his ordinarv work. later in the day lie became ill and died.

THE “DAWN” I’ll.Af. AVELLINGTON, Afay 2. From inquiries at official quarters in regard to the film “ Dawn,” it does not appear that any but normal action will be taken in regard to its introduction to New Zealand. It will probably go before the Censor in the ordinary way. He has power to disapprove of films which, in his opinion, depict matter against public order and decency, for exhibition of which, for any other reason, is undesirable in the public interests.
