SEAMEN AND MINERS
NEAY AGREEMENTS SOUGHT.

WELLINGTON, April 30.
An agreement has been drawn up between the United Mine Workers of New Zealand and tlie New Zealand Rea men’s Union, containing the following principal provisions: (If) The .senmen are to refuse to carry coal should the minors lie engaged in a fight, and are to give financial support if necessary. (2) The miners are to refuse to produce coal .for “scab” ships if the seamen are engaged in light, and to give financial support, if necessary. (3) Before the Union takes action which may involve the other, the other union is to lie consulted.
(-1) These projmsnls are to bo .submitted to rank and file of both unions for endorsement.
Both parties to the compact arc seeking new agreements with the employers. Claims for increases in pay and for improved conditions of employment were recently advanced hy the seamen.
The members of the National Council of the Miners’ Union recently decided to make the following claims upon tli<‘ mine owners to cover all districts:—A 7.1 per cent, increase in
wage rates; a 5 per cent, increase in tonnage and yardage rates; a 3 per cent, increase in timber rates. It is claimed that there should lie a weekly minimum of £4 12s Gd: for all adult workers, and that youths should he paid in proportion. A ten flays’ holiday Tor all workers with service of one year or more, is suggested, and there are other claims covering details of mining work.

In connection with the recent Alillerton strike, notice lias been served on 310 miners to appear at the Magistrate's Court on AA'odnosdnv to answer a charge of alleged broach of award. The complaint was made hy the rope road hoys that the lives at the AA'ostport Coal Company’s Iron bridge, where they wore working, were not lit. This led to the hoys going home. The Detiuiston minors were consequently idle to-dav.
SEA COOKS’ STRIKE. SYDNEY. April 30. Further calls for cooks for Huddart Parker’s ships failed to secure a rcs])on.so. The owners had a similar experience at Melbourne, although there is no difficulty in obtaining cooks for vessels lielonging to other Lines. MELBOURNE. April 30.
At the Federal Arbitration Court, during Ihc hearing of a plaint hy tlio Merchant Service Guild. Mr Justice Dethridge referred to the Cooks’ strike. He said that the cooks would get kicked out of I lie Court. Ho had told the cooks that they had their remedy by coming to the Court to get their grievances righted, but when they struck and then came to the Court, out they would go. and their award with them.
