BRIDGE GIVES WAY. OAMARU, April 27. A narrow escape from serious accident occurred on the combined traffic bridge over the Upper Waitaki yesterday. A train of fourteen trucks loaded with stock was crossing from Hakataramea to ivurow. when one of tin? plies gave wav under the engine, with the result that part of the bridge sank two feet, on the up-stream side. The beams held, however, and the train got over.

THE C. A. LARSEN. DUNEDIN, April 27. Tenders for temporary repairs to the damaged winder, C. A. Larsen, will close on Monday. It is likely that there will 'he two tenders from Port Chalmers, one from Christchurch and one from Auckland. The whaler will probably go to Norway or some European port for permanent repairs. Lloyd’s Surveyor, when asked by a reporter whether alternative tenders for temporary and permanent repairs were being invited, replied that both kinds of work were included in the specification. The cost of salvaging the damaged whaler and bringing her from Stewart Island to Port Chalmers is said to have been about £25,000.

The Magistrate said that the accident was most unfortunate, but there was no blame attachable to anyone. A gallant fireman hacl died in the execution of his duty. He believed that no unreasonable steps had been taken by the firemen, and he did not think that they had taken a risk

greater than that which they accepted every time they mounted their engine.

RADIO DEALER’S LICENSE. AUCKLAND, April 27. A charge against J. H. Ansell, an auctioneer, of selling wireless apparatus without a radio dealer’s license was dismissed by Mr M’Tvean. S.M.. at the Police Court to-day. The Magistrate said that defendant’s business was to sell goods of all kinds. Unless a person intended to carry on a business of selling wireless apparatus, lie was not required to obtain a radio dealer’s license.
