On Friday evening last in the Toara Hall a concert was held under lie auspices of the Ladies Guild of he Boss Presbyterian Church.

The entertainment was a most successful one Imtli financial and otherwise. The programme was a lengthy and varied one and was provided entirely hy talent from within this district.

Some splendid items were suplied by the juveniles and for which heir tutor Mrs Windsor is to be enrtily congratulated.

At the conclusion of the concert Air 8. R. Heyward thanked the large audience for their patronage and all those who had helped to make the function so successful.

FOOTBALL. The first match of the season took place on the. Recreation ground on Saturday between Ross and Excelsior

Quite a shock was caused when views was received in Ross yesterday of the sudden death at Reefton on Sunday of AD’s Ethel May Burns. The deceased was the youngest daughter of the late Air Cress AVoolbou.se (recently drowned in the Totara Lagoon) and was married only six weeks ago. She was 21 years of age. Her mother resides in AYaiutn as also does her sisters. Dorothy and Rita., and her two brothers, Edward and William. Another sister, Isabel, resides in Westport. Sincere sympathy will be extended to her husband, mother, brothers and sisters in the sad loss they have sustained. The body will be brought to Ross where the funeral takes place on Tuesdy afternoon, leaving Airs Alason’s re-

idence at Donnelly’s Creek at 2.30 'clock.

Whitson, who lias held llie position of statioiiniaster at Ross fur the (last four years has received notice of his transfer oil promotion to Christchurch and leaves Ross to take up his new duties on Saturday next. Air F. It. Dully. of Amlerley. will lie Air Watson’s successor at Ross. Air H. I. Stanley, of Christchurch, will fill the

position until Air Duffy’s arrival. A farewell social will be tendered to Air and Airs AYtson next Thursday evening in the Totara Hall.

(By ‘ Arence.’) A fire occurred in the police station residence at Ross 11 iimorning, just after midnight. The fire broke through the roof and the building was badly gutted. The residence bad been unoccupied for two or three weeks, sime the departure of the resident constable there. Considerable damage was done before the flames were subdued. The train front Hokitika to Ro,-s on Saturday night struck a cow about four miles front Ross, one truck being derailed, but after a delay of a quarter of an hour the train was able to proceed.
