Although there was no goods traffic on the railways on Monday on account of the holidays, the traffic through the Otira tunnel for the week showed an increase on the corresponding week last year. The increase is chiefly accounted for by the bar at the mouth of the (4 rev River being silted up, thus preventing shipping carrying much coal out of the port. Last week--7814 tons of goods were hauled through the tunnel as compared with 77)80 for the corresponding week of 1927.

A lire in the hulk store of Martin and Co.. Westport, al 5.311 a.m. yesterday was the cause of an alarm. .Mr Frank McLean, night watchman, on the railway, was first to see the fire and promptly gave the alarm. The fire apparently began among some packing cases in an open alleyway, between two store rooms, and spread rapidly. 'When, however, the Fire Brigade came on the scene, they had such a good volume of water that they quickly suppressed the flames and extinguished the fire. Very tittle damage was done to the main store adjoining, the prompt action of the brigade cheeking the Haines just as they had broken through. In the hulk stores, however, lire and water have, done a considerable amount of damage, the value of which is not at present assessable. The linn had an insurance on stock and building, hut the amounts are not available.
As an outcome of representations made to Hon (). llawken. Minister of Agriculture, when recently at If a riba ri, with respect to extending La Fontaine road down the Big "Wanganui Flat. After having served for thirty-seven years, an old railway engine, one ot the “X” class, was tipped over tin* side of the line into the Bealey river, between Cass and Cora Lynn, on .Sunday. There it will lie holding hack the surging waters, so that its m.no modern brothers may haul the trams across the island safely. The old "N” was brought across from the 'West Coast on its own wheels. T'su.iily, only the boilers of worn-out locomotives are used for protective works, hut in this ease the whole engine was tipped. Imported in 1891 by the ’Wellington.Manawatu Railway Company for work on the Palmerston North line, the engine did good service there for some years. Then with the taking over of the company by the (government, the -engine was given various duties, finally being used on the slow trains of tin; West Coast. With this engine written off only one of the “X” class remains. It is still running on the AsliburtonSpringburn line.
