HOKITIKA GOLF CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING. The Annual General .Meeting was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday, April 10th. at 8 p.m. Mr J. C. Macfarlane presided overall attendance of 30 mem hers. The minutes of the previous annual general meeting were read and confirmed. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT. Ladies and Gentlemen, —I have the honor to report on the operations of your club for the past season as follows : Matches.—Club Championship: Air J. A. Chesney (holder) . Ladies’ Championship: Miss M. E. Moore (holder). Opening Mixed Foursome: Miss A. Mclntosh and Mr Chesney. Final Mixed Foursome: Miss Wilson and .Mr Fowler. Four-hall Bogey Handicap (Mr Cliesney’s trophy): Messrs Christianson and Burns. Captain versus Secretary’s teams match: Secretary’s team. Medal Aggregate (Gauston vase): Mr IS. Partridge. Bogey Aggregate (Captain’s trophy): Mr Chesney.

The usual monthly and bogey matches were also played and also single challenge matches for the Snell v hallenge Badge which provided some keen competition. Conditions for winning the Snell Challenge Badge outliglit will he discussed at this meeting. • The usual inter-club match was played with Greymouth on the Omoto links on June 3rd (King’s Birthday) and resulted in a win for Hokitika which thus became the first holder of the Seddou C hallenge Cup played for in conjunction with this match. A “B ’’ team from the Greymouth Club also tried conclusions with the Hokitika Club on the Mahinapua Links on the same date the final result being in favour of Grevmouth.

It is regretted that no return mattlies could he arranged. Walker and Halls teams competition: No match in this connection was played liv your Cluli owing to the fact that the usual notification from the N.Z. Association fixing a date lor same was not received.

West Coast ( hanipionship Tournament: This tournament was played on your links during August and proved an unprecedented success. The weather conditions which contribute so much to the success of such a gathering were perfect. The fairway and greens were in first class order the tees and greens having been levelled and top-dressed in preparation for the event. 1 have much pleasure in here referring to the achievement ol our local cluli champion, Mr Chesney, in winning the Const Championship alter a close and exciting final round with air .McCarthy of the Greymouth Club. Other local players were successful in minor events. The visitors were entertained by local members on the night of the closing day at a dance which proved a very successful and enjoyable finale to the three days’ tournament. This tournament will next he held at Greymouth towards the end ol August or early in September. Ground Improvements. A contract was let at a satisfactory figure for the cleaning of the south end of the links and was completed late last year. I lie land has been tired with some success in which connection we were lavoured with extra dry weather. Second growth has however made considerable headway and will have lo have close attention if we arc to have a lull eighteen hole con: sc available when next the West Coast ( hamoionship is due to he held here in the year 1930. The outgoing Committee make a strong recommendation to the imoming committee that the effect of the work done in this direction he not lost and that its completion'lw pushed on to the utmost limits which the financial resources of the club will allow.

Rules of Etiquette.---. Members were individualy circularised during the season regarding the strict necessity of keeping the turf replaced. It is hoped that this will effect a much needed improvement in the fairway generally which was becoming hadlv cut up. Another matter to which members are enjoined to give closer attention is the necessity of allowing players ahead to gel out of range before playing a following ball. There were many eases reported of flagrant bronchos ol this important rule during last season and your assistance in seeing that it is complied with at all times is requested. Groundkeeper.—A new grouiulkeepei Air F. Groufsk.v was appointed vice Air Krakowsky, resigned. The thanks of the club are due to the press for its courtesy in publishing drawings and results of matches.

The Balance Sheets for the year 1237-28 will now lie read l>v the Hon. Treasurer and will on the whole disclose a satisfactory financial position. The large amount of outstanding subscriptions. however, calls for some comment and the early remittance of such would he much appreciated. I have much pleasure in adding to the report that the ladies to-night at their annual meeting voted a sum of 220 from their funds towards the expenses of the Club. This handsome donation, 1 need hardly add, will he heartily appreciated by members.

The Chairman’s report mid Balance Sheet were adopted. Some discussion ensued in regard to the large amount of outstanding subscriptions disclosed by the Balance Sheet and the incoming committee were recommended to take prompt action to recover same, more especially those more than one year in arrear. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following officers were then elected for the ensuing year. Captain: Air J. Macfarlane. Hon. Secretary: Air Thus. Cagney. Hon. Treasurer: Air J AY. Alorris. Committee: Alesdantes Staveloy and Buchanan, Alessrs Chesney, Cooke, Burns, Neville and Cox. Championship Cup.—Resolved that Mr Chesney who lias won the cup every year since it was donated lie presented with a replica of same to hold as his own property.

Snell Challenge Badge.—lt was decided that members who had won this badge not less than four times he created a section to compete for same with a view to winning it outright. 1 iie opening day was fixed for Salur-_ day the 21st inst when a mixed handicap foursome match over 13 holes will he played. Partnerships will he drawn. Various suggestions were discussed regarding the genera! improvement of the links, including the planting of trees.

The mooting concluded with a vote of [hanks to the County Council for the use of the room and a vote of thanks the Chairman.
