WEDNESDAY, APRIL lltli. The Council sat at 7.35 o’clock. Present: (>. A. Perry, Esq. (Mayor) in the chair, Messrs J.'lying, T. W. Duff, D. J. Evans. W. Jeffries, G. Heinz, K. Heenan, A Armstrong, and Dr Teichelmann. Apology was made for the absence ol Mr Eleock. I he minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed and the outward correspondence was approved. IXWAD 1) CORRESPONDENCE. I‘rom Grey County Council, forwarding statement of license fees and expenditure under Motor Lorry Regulations for year ending 31st March ; together with c heque for £2B l() s 3d ; and intimating that a meeting of iocni authorities ol No. 12 District would he held at Greyinotuh at 8 p.m. on Friday, the Lltli instant to apportion heavy traffic* lees lor the coming vear. —Received. It was pointed out that the expenses for collection were high. Cr. Evans and the Town Clerk were appointed to represent the Council at the meeting. From Deputy Chief Inspector of Explosives, Wellington, forwarding Orders-in-Coiineil respecting Dangerous Goods By-law; and also copy of the Dangerous Goods Regulations, 1028.—Received. Emm L. Reid, llevell Street, Hokitika. offering to demonstrate electrical traffic regulator for streets.— Received and referred to Motor Traffic Committee. Hokitika Eire -Board, forwarding resolution calling Council’s attention to the necessity of hand-rail on the fire escape at the Princes Theatre.—Received and referred to theatre company for action. From New Zealand Federated Iron Masters’ Association, Wellington, conveying resolution urging local authorities to purchase machinery within the Dominion.—Received. From Undor-SocTOfnry, Public Works Department. Wellington, forwarding copy of the Motor Lorry Regulations Amendment No. 1. —Received. From Acting Secretary. Hokitika Fire Board, intimating that. From Treasurer notifying receipts £10.59 2s Id ; accounts passed lor payment £57(1 8s 1 Id ; credit balance £1045 15s 8d. —Received and adopted. I beg to report the Billowing work was carried out during the mouth.

Tar-sealing was carried out in Sewell Street between AVcld Street and Cibson Quay. completing this section, except over the wooden drain on the oast side of the street, the distance being about eight chains. Cass Stpiaro footpath and cycling track was tar-sealed, the distance being about twenty chains. A fire-plug was repaired in Hamilton Street near the Fire Brigade station, also a plug in Sewell Street which was broken on the night ol the fire at .Newman’s garage. ref|uiring a new casting. A break Look place in Sewell Street near Kirwan’s garage and ill lancred Street between AVeld and Stafford Streets, which was repaired. A concrete crossing was put in at .T, Cameron’s in Revell Street, and a water connection at D. Dowell’s. One chain of 4-inch earthenware pipes were laid in Hibson Quay between path on the east side into Britton Street drain.

Four chains of 4-inch galvanised pipes were aid in Hibson Quay between Davie and Jollie Streets to connect with plug for lire purposes. Hrowth was cut in Fitzherbort Street near the railway yard, and in Park Street, between Sewell and Revell Streets.

The drain at the hack of iho cemetery was also cleaned out. The pipes crossing Stribliliug frock bridge drew apart on Monday night tha 19th, which we repaired, and on Saturday the 24th a hlow-nut took place in Tucker Flat, which emptied the Reservoir. AA’e took the opportunity of cleaning out and examining the concrete with Air Holmes, who is reporting on same. Leaks were repaired in various parts of the town during the month. The water in the reservoir averaged 4 feet 11 inches for the month. Arising out of the Foreman’s report, Cr. Heinz stated it would he advisable in view of the number of lead pipe connections to ask the Fire Brigade when using water not to screw the hydrants down too suddenly. Mr Hoi nr', and the Town Clerk were asked to mention the matter to the Superintendent.

ABATTOIR REPORT. The Manager reported 521 animals had been slaughtered during the month and two wore condemned. The foes collected were C7!> 5s (corresponding period last year L'7',s 4s fid).—Received. HEXERAL. The attention of the Works Committee was called to the state of some of the roads, and an extra horse and dray were authorised for repairs. It was decided to call the attention of the Railway Department to the footpath crossing in Hampden Street. The AVorks Committee was asked to attend to the footpath on the east side of Sale Street between Stafford and Hampden Streets. It was resolved to notify section holders in Revell Street to fence vacant holdings. Minor repairs to Revell Street footpath were sanctioned. The Mayor reported regarding the arrflugeipents for the commemoration of Apzmc Pav,—Approved,

TENDERS. The following tenders were received for clearing growth and noxious plants round Cass Square fences.—Accepted : Jas. Millner, £ll 14s; declined: J. Timpson £ls 10s; A. Sumner CIO; A. .T. Phillips £2O. The Council rose at 8.40 p.m.
