LABOUR PARTY CONFERENCE
(lly Telegraph—Per Press Association. - ) WELLINGTON. April 10. The Annual Conference of the Now Zealand Labour Party was continued to-day. The Rev. J. K. Archer, Mayor of Christchurch, was elected President. Mr .1. Thorn, of Wellington, was elected Vice-President. The following resolution was worried concerning the .statements that had been made in reference to Mr .1. Roberts and Mr W. Bromley:— “That this Conference regrets the unfounded statements made against Messrs Roberts and liromley. to the effect that they had nequioeed in the pnvmenl" of !)> a day to single men. and It's a day to married men by the Government, to men working on unemployed reliel work, and that this Conference, further, expresses its complete conlidenee in Mr Roberts and Mi- liromley. and it thanks them tor the services which they have rendered to the New Zealand Labour Movement.”
A remit proposing the modification of the existing pledge of membership which debars members of the Communist Party from being accepted as members of the New Zealand Labour Party, was defeated by an overwhelming majority. Tile voting was as follows: For the Admission of Communists: 9. Against the Admission of Communist.-: ICO. WELLINGTON, April 10. The annual Cotilerenee of the New Zealand Labour Parly was "continued to-day, Air R. Semple presiding over a full representation of delegates. The morning was taken up in discussing questions concerning the representation of brain lies and Trades I’nions on the Labour Representation Committees, in practically every instance the Conference decided to retain the present system of representation .
The immediate objective of the New Zealand Labour Party was defined by the President (Mr It. Semple) in the course of his remarks at the opening of the Dominion Conference this morning. a.s “the winning of New Zealand for the useful people, and the establishment of society based upon .social - justice, conceding to every rit man and woman the right to work, and assuring every mother of the nation of a home to shelter her offspring, and the fullest and freest education.” The responsibility- was upon them, lie said, to banish, from New Zealand the causes that produced inequality, unemployment, penury and want.
