LABOUR CONFERENCE. WELLINGTON. April 9. The immediate objective of the New Zealand Labour Party was defined by the President, Mr I?. Semple, in the course of his remarks at the opening of the Dominion Conference this morning as “the winning of New Zealand for the useful people and the establishment ol a society based upon social justice conceding to every lit man and woman the right to work, and assuring every mother of the nation of a home to shelter her offspring to the fullest and freest education.” The responsibility was upon them to Inmtsii from New Zealand the causes that prod need inequality, unemployment, penury and want.

Thomas Robertson, farm manager of I’ukotanu, "as killed last evening through a ear in which he was travelling to Napier going over a bank on the Tv Ante Hill. burned to death. CM 1! ISTCII IT? C 11. April 10. James Mtirison, aged Gi. was burned to death in his hu! at Prehbleton yesterday morning. Evidence at the inquest showed deceased was n bachelor and lived alone in a hut for 20 years. A verdict of death from injuries through his hut catching fire was returned.
A RESCUE. CHRISTCHURCH. April 10. The Sumner lile-Loat rescued a crow „| four of the yacht “Mtiia” (owned by G. 11. Karr) which capsized in rough weather on the Sumner bar yesterday. The resettl'd members of the crew were little the worse for their experience. fatal injuries. AUCKLAND. April 10. Fatal injuries were sustained by Maud Ivy Templev, aged 17. who fell Ilian a horse at. Mnriwi Beach on Saturday afternoon. She suflered a compound fracture of. Ihe .skull and died not regaining consciousness, dying yesterday afternoon. ESCAPEE RECAPTURED. INVERCARGILL. April I”. Chns Newman, who escaped from the Borstal Institute on Thursday was recaptured at 7 o'clock last night hiding under a haystack at Otautnu. POLICE RAID. WELLINGTON. April 10. The police last night raided a City club ol which the name is not published and arrested over fifty men on a charge of gambling. They smashed a door in and one man who went t« see what was happening narrowly escaped injury. The men were taken in batches to the station, which was busy till the small hour of the morning. while the defendants were searched and jbail found. They appear in Court to-day.
NEW ZEALAND REFEREES MEET NELSON. April 10.
The annual Conference ol the New Zealand Rugby Referees Association is being bold at Nelson. A motion to remove the headquarters from Wellington and make it moveable, was lost by two votes. The election of officers resulted:—President. Mr D. McKenzie; Executive, Messrs S. A. Eletcber. J. H. Francis. 1.. Sicvers. f|. Bradley. A. M. Sims and 11. I McKenzie. The position of honorary secretary and treasurer was hdt to the executive to fill. Mr Sicvers. who occupied the position lor the past fifteen veins, refusing nomination. He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his services to the Association.

Miss Evelyn Anderson was a through, passenger to Honolulu by the Aorangi from Sydney yesterday under her maiden name, not having heard |i-oin Basil Stanley, who disappeared in Auckland after the couple, lacking n passport, had been refused permission to land. Tt was then stated that they were married at Honolulu on March 13 and that Miss Anderson was the daughter of o wealthy sugar planter.
