COMMITTED FOR TRIAL ASHBURTON. April 5. John Biair, farmer, of Dromorc, was committed for trial on a charge cf unlawfully selling the stock and chattels secured to the Land Department under a bill of sale, executed in lieu of arrears of rent. He pleaded not guilty. A REAIANJ). AUCKLAND. April 5. At the Police Court, James Henry Alokeich, arrested at Ashburton and charged with having caused a girl under 16 years to he taken out of the possession of her parents against their will was remanded to appear on the 16th. Accused is at present serving a sentence of fourteen days imprisonment for default of payment of his wife’s maintenance. Bail of £IOO was granted. DRUNKEN DRIVER. TIAfAIIU, April 5. At the Alagistrate’s Court to-day George Leishman was fined £lO and costs -5s for being in charge of a motor car whilst in a state of intoxication. CAR FALLS 300 FEET. NEW PLYMOUTH, April <>. A remarkable escape from death by two motorists, Air and Airs AY. A. i itomasoii, of Inglewood, was the leature of a smash on .Mount .Messenger on Thursday, when a car plunged off the road and crashed 31)0 feet into a wooded ravine.
After falling one hundred feet, however, the occupants were thrown clear of the car, and their descent was then stopped by some growth mi the olid face.
All- Thomason, in endeavouring to pass a ear driven by Rev. C. X. Roberts (who lias been transferred from To Awamulii to New Plymouth), steered too near the edge of the olid", and the ear toppled over.
The Rev. Roberts, with the utmost difficulty, il ragged Airs and Air I liomason to the road. Air I ltomason hail bis collarbone anil three ribs broken. Airs Thomason has a broken shoulder, and facial cuts. They were taken to the New Plymouth Hospital, and are progressing satisfactorily.
BOY FATALLY SHOT. REEFTOX, April 6. This afternoon a sail tragedy occurred at Boatman's, near Cronadun. whereby a boy of fifteen years was accidentally shot. Three boys, all of Hie same age, and belonging to the locality, Louis Wright (son of Air .fames AYright of Cruniiauii. coal minor). John AYright. bis cousin, and ISi-rnaril Rodgers (son of Air Bernard Rodgers, farmer) went out and engaged in shooting with n pea lido about 2.30 p.in., using a tin lor their target, and placing it upon a stump. Louis AYright stood evidently too close to the stump whilst one ol the other lads was tiring and he suddenly collapsed alter the shot having had a bullet penetrate bis skull. It is presumed that the bullet ricoebeteed oil’ the stump. Tin- boy was at once taken to Air Rodger's larni and Dr ( onion (Reel toil) was summoned, lull I lie victim expired immediately, before tin* arrival of the doctor. who found that a bullet bad penetrated tlm boy's skull. TWO MINERS INJURED. AIILLERTON. April 6. An accident occurred at the Alillerton Aline yesterday through falls of coal, as the result ol which two men met with serious injuries. One. Both men were removed to the Westport Hospital They were detained in the Alillerlou Surgery for a while until the ambulance was got going. Surely the medical officials could remedy this delay in future accidents. and thus make a quicker
journey for the patients. Then* was a thiid man. Air W. Dent, injured in the Alilli-rton accident, but bis case was less serious tliau tile others. His lather, a well-
known resident, some years ago met bis death in an accident. It is hoped that all will make a good recovery.
BOTH LEGS BROKEN. INVERCARGILL. April 6

Coates, yesterday that a detachment of military police, consisting of G 1 officers and men. under the comma ml of -Major P. 11. Bell, will be sent to Samoa to replace the Diomede’s marines. Applications for inclusion in the detachment will he called for and the men will leave Auckland by the Tutanekai on April 21st. but will previously be given a week’s special training in Trent bn in. It was not the first fatality that had taken place there, and the provision of a life saving reel would be beneficial. A finding of accidental death through drowning was returned.
