ENGINE DRIVER LOSES HIS FOOT AUCKLAND, April 4.
The foot of an engine driver, E. McPhnil, of Auckland, was almost amputated a.s tiro result of an accident in Iluntly railway yards early this morning. McPhail was standing oil the connecting at the side of the engine, when the engine unexpectedly moved. His foot was caught in a narrow space between the moving rod and other machinery, and was practically severed.
The injured man was admitted to Huntly Hospital where an operation was performed immediately. V ELLINGTON OUTBREAK. WELLINGTON, April 4. Severe damage by fire and water was done to the Shell -Motor' Spirit Company’s oil stores and contents last evening on the Hntt Road. The Fire Brigade got control and supressed the fire after an hour’s work. The insurances are not available. Later the brigade was called to a three-floored building at the corner of Marion -and Glmznee Streets. Here the stock of Henry Kesuick, a tailor, was severely damaged, on the second Hoot, and that of Joseph Zimme on the top floor. The Hereford Printing Company, on the bottom floor, suffered damage by water. The building is owned hv Phillip Hcrciord, and is insured for £SOOO in the -mercantile and General Office. Respick’s stock is insured for £2OO, and Zimme’s for 2300 in the Southern Union. The Hereford Coy’s stock is insured for 230.0 in the Atlas and its machinery for £2500 in the Eagle Coy.
FATALITIES. AUCKLAND. April 4. The body of a man found dead in some hushes at Grey Lynn yesterday has been identified as that of David James Parkinson, aged 53, a single, retired farmer. He had been missing since Julv last.
DROPPED DEAD. ELiTHAM, April 3.
Leonard Thomson, aged C2, an employee of the Kltlia.ni Borough Council street staff for 48 years, dropped dead in the Town Hall this morning while engaged in cleaning operations.
AUCKLAND OIL BLAZE. AUCKLAND, April 4
The tire at AVinstone’s Oil Store, which broke out hist Sunday afternoon, lias considerably abated. It is evident the end is quickly approaching. The funeral of Fireman R. G. Beuth. victim of the fire, was held this afternoon, and was most impressive, close on ten thousand people lining the route.
BUBAL BOND ISSUE SUBSCRIBED. WELLINGTON. April I. The Minister of Finance stated today that the issue of £400,000 Rural Advances Bonds had been subscribed. The Minister added that the right to accept amounts in excess of that stated in the prospectus was. however, being exercised. A MAORI KILLED. GISBORNE. April 5. Fatal injuries as the result of a fall from a lorry were sustained by a Maori named Kaa Te Banna, aged 2i. at Ruatoria. Deceased was proceeding with another man in an empty lorry to secure chonping blocks for Runtoria snorts. The lorry .swayed and T' Raima over-balanced and fell head first on the road and struck his head on a stone. He was admitted to the Tcpuia Hospital last evening suffering from a compound fracture of the skull and died early this morning.
