HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONDAY, APRIL 2nd. The Committee met at 7 p.m. Present: Messrs IV. E. Richards (voted to the chair), F. Orr. IV. Clarke, R. Pedder, J. Coulson, H. Sweney, IV. Shannon and J. Conning (lion. sec). An apology was made for the absence of the Chairman. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. INIVAR D CORRESPONDENCE.
From Dental Officer, suggesting an electric heater and light be installed in the clinic.— lteeived. A suggestion was made by Air Richards that application for monetary assistance towards the request be made to country school committees adjacent whose schools used the clinic. The Secretary stated that application had been made on several occasions previously without eliciting even a reply. Tt was resolved that consideration of the letter be held over pending the result of an appeal being made to country school oommittes for assistance.
From Miss Mary Bruce, resigning position as assistant teacher.—Received and accepted with regret. From Grey Jubilee Committee asking for promised donation towards Children’s Day.—Received. Mr Shannon moved that the £lO promised he forwarded, hut the Committee desired to express its regret at the unsatisfactory manner of the carrying out of the arrangements for the children on the day in question.—Seconded hv Air On- and carried.
From Visiting Committee (Messrs Shannon and Orr) reporting on visit to sdhool. Some wire netting was required for several windows; some clearing up was required in various parts of the ground, a leak in the hot water tank required attention by the Board. —Received and recommendations approved. The question of levelling the portion of the plot near the flagpole and laying down in grass was left to the Secretary to arrange for.
The Rector (Ah' Partridge) reported a mild attack of influenza had somewhat affected the attendance which for the quarter averaged 272.4. roll number 295, primary and 91.8, roll number 06, secondary; 91 average for the secondary school was required to retain the fourth assistant. Air E. B. Reid had taken up his duties in the secondary school and Afiss Bruce, assistant teacher had resigned. Air T. G, Fouliy, Dental Officer, took up his duties at the beginning of last month. A first aid equipment had been procured. The annual sports gathering had taken place successfully on Cass Square last Wednesday, 64 events being run off in four hours. Mr D. J. Evans had presented a map of the British Empire as a trophy for the winning section of the Sports to hold. Some improvements were asked for the teachers’ room, in the grounds and alongside the building.—Received. It yas resolved to apply to the Board for
the '.improvements for the teachers’ room and the provision of strong seating on tho north side of the school be arranged. A number of small requirements were approved. It was resolved that the school holidays extend from Thursday afternoon. sth. until Alonday morning, 16th. inst. Accounts as tabled were passed for payment. Aleissrs Richards and Sweney were appointed visitors for the month. The meeting terminated at 8.15 p.m.
