At the Beautifying Society function yesterday reference was made to the bad practice again taking place of tracks being made across tbo grass plots on Cass Square. It was indicated steps were being taken to prevent the unsightly practice.

One of tlie speakers at the gathering ot workers in connection with the Beautifying Society yesterday referred to tin- fact that the back ground of trees to the Pioneers Memorial had been removed. It was suggested a trellis work should be placed in position and a climbing rose planted to provide a suitable background to the plot.
The question of cleaning lip the sides of public thoroughfares in the town, so that the growth might be kept trim and orderly was urged yesterday at the social gathering to discuss matters relating to the work of the Beautifying Society. It was pointed out this was work in which residents could help if the local body saw to the levelling of the roadsides by spreading the unsightly mounds of spoil which are often left indefinitely when drains are cleaned or deepened, instead of being spread level over tile surrounding surface.
.Air A. (t. Turtill bail the misfortune last evening to lose bis motor car. He was travelling to Greymoiith, and when about a mile south of Paron the ear. a Ford Sedan, developed engine trouble. AYlien the owner got out and began to crank the machine, the engine backfired. and in less than half a minute the car was ablaze. It was completely destroyed and as it was not insured, the miner is a serious loser.

A large party of ladies and gentlemen were entertained by the lion. .Mr and Mrs Michel at afternoon tea at Preston’s rooms yesterday. The 0.-ac-sion was the presentation of the accounts of the recent gala in aid of the Beautifying Society. Mr Michel being President. After partaking of refreshments, Mi' Michel expressed thanks to all who had helped at the gala. He traced the history of the Society and referred to the useful work it was doing, lie mentioned it was only by sustained work the benefits would he felt. He realised that Cass Square was a great asset to the town, and its upkeep in seemly order caught the eye of visitors. Mr .T, Niven, lion, secretary, detailed the receipts and expenses in connection with the recent benefit which showed a net return of over Cliff, which would discharge all liabilities at date. Messrs Evans and Preston joined in thanking Mr and .Mrs Michel for their Hospitality and praised the work of the Society, which it was hoped would he continued. The former referred to different activities for further attention, and the latter stressed specially the value of improving the ocean bench. The statement of accounts was adopted and it was resolved to hold a gala on St. Patrick’s day anniversary next year for the benefit of the funds. Several new members are joining the Society which it is Imped will he considered augmented during the year.
A meeting was held at the County Chainher.s yesterdav evening to meet -Mi- B. .M. Wilson. head ollicial of the X.Z. 'Tourist Department. I)r Tci< helmann. President of the Progress League, presided, and there were representatives of the League and local Tourist Association present. A nunilier of matters were brought under the notice of .Mr Wilson bv several speakers some of whom stressed the necessity of a “tourist policy” for Westland. Mr Wilson explained that Ins Department efid not control road expenditure for tourist resorts, but agreed to present representations on the subject to the proper quarter. A request to assist with the cost of an additional 1,000 .copies of the booklet “A Holiday in Westland” was noted for favourable reference to the Minister. A note was taken also of other requests relating to publicity, as well as improvements to Tuhua track. \ aliens works about the local lakes and at the glaciers were mentioned, also improved tracks at the Sounds. I hese were all matters, however, outside Mr Wilson's department. To-day in company with Dr Teiehelmann. Mr Wilson is visiting Lake Kanieri and South Hokitika, and proceeds north this afternoon. Mr Wilson hopes to return within a year’s time, and spend a longer period in South Westland. On this occasion owing to a slip on the road below Waiho Gorge he was not able to visit Weheka hut will do so on next occasion.
