THE BISHOP AND THE ECO
When in private practice Mr Justice Blair, at present presiding ever tlie Hamilton Supreme Court, gained a reputation for witticisms that did not desert: him when he was elevated to the Bench. He scored very neatly oil' a M.orrinsviile solicitor during the hearing of a ease a few days ago. His Honor, commenting on a list ol specifications drawn up, said the first hall appeared to he finite ill order, hut that the list in toto reminded him of the story of the bishop and the egg. the judge looked interrogatively at the solicitor, and the solicitor assumed a very wise look, hoping his Honor would not labour the point. But It is Honor was not so easily disposed 01. “Yin have heard that little story, Mr. the truth, I have not,” was the reply. “Then it is high time you learnt it,” remarked ihe judge, and proceeded to retail the story. A waitress in a hotel noticed that a. certain hisliop did not appear to be enjoying his breakfast one morning, and inquired if his egg was all right. Well, it is all right in parts,” was the reply. “ And it is like your specifications,” said Judge Blair. “The first part is all right, but the remainder is rotten.” WRONG PLACE ALTOGETHER. There is said to he good authority for the story that a party of Wairarapa visitors to Wellington found themselves in the wrong place altogether when they set out not long ago to inspect the Newtown Zoj (says Ihe “\\nirarnpa. Age ”). Proceeding by car, the party entered a long drive, and one nl its members observed that this looked like the place, there being plenty of trees about. At the top of a rise, however, the car was halted by a severe-looking person who desired to be iniormed where its occupants thought they were going to. “ To the /no, he \tas told. “ This is not the Zoo.” he said with unabated severity, “ this is Government House.”
