The recent heavy rain, particularly ini Monday last, was responsible for a <onsiderahle amount of road damage, chiefly by scouring out hilly parts, and necessitating a good deal of general repairs. There was a large amount of seepage water in the Kokatahi district, and the small creeks in Ixoitoraiigi district were not able to carry all the extra water, and overflowed rite roads. Strange to say, however, the main streams hereabouts were not. flooded unduly. In the .southern district the rainfall was abnormal. Over four inches fell at AVailio Gorge on .Monday. Evans Creek is reported to have scoured badly again, and the northern abutment of the bridge suffered some damage which will he the subject of immediate repairs. The blasting operations were carried out under the direction of Mr J. I.enihait. foreman of works, and one ton of high explosive was fired. Seen later by a reporter, Mr f.etiihan said that the blast was most successful, although it was impossible that evening to get a correct estimate ol the quantity ol stone brought down, owing to the darkness and heavy rain. Several blocks weighing front 100 to 500 tons were dislodged and a much larger quantity of good stone would slip front the lace oi tlte quarry, when once the “toe” was removed. The vibration trout the shot was felt in many buildings in Gi-evinotif It.
