Scholos ami Edwin Andrew (Simpson were sentenced by Justice Blair on twenty-one charges of false pretences and theft, S'choles being also convicted on a (barge of escaping from custody and obtaining £p) I- hy valueless cheques. Scholcs was -,-n----tcnced to five years imprisonment for fraud and one year additional for escaping from custody. Simpson was sentenced to two years reformative detention. In a ease of bigamy against Charles Kemble Poore, the .Judge considered there were extenuating eireumstanees, accused having an unblemished character. Ilis marriage in Loudon in 1925 had been an unwise one. lie had gone through a form of marriage with the other woman at New Plymouth. apparently because he was anxious to father her child front a sense of duty. Doctor Hughes, Health Officer at Auckland, who represented New Zealand at a gathering of medical men organised hy the League of Nations and Government of India returned by the Maraina to-day. He states that the tour of India took seven weeks. The tour would he the subject ot a special report he is making to the Director of Health. Dr \alintine. Between thirty and forty towns anti numerous villages in nine province* were visited. They inspected numerous institutions such as medical colleges. hospitals, laboratories and stmatoriitfms and gained first hand knowledge of the methods followed. The party witnessed a religious festivity at Magi: Mela, in which 200.090 pilgrims tracticipated. These enormous gatherings are a danger for epidemics throughout the country on the dispersal of pilgrims and created one of the great problems of India. In Bengal province alone, where there was a population of torty-seven million in 84,748 villages, the magnitude of the task of preventing any dealing with cholera epidemics would he appreciated. In Hof hi tie Institute specialists dealt with the problem of the spreading „f the plague through rats anil rat fleas. in this institute antiplague vaccine and anti-venomous serum were made. The Institute had turned out a hundred million doses of anti-vaccine. At Ceylon Mr Hughes visited a factory engaged in the nianufaftuie of reconditioned milk and cream. The , factorv used only butter anil dry . milk ‘ powder from Waikato. ho sampled their product. H was exj cellent indeed. Tt was the best drink , fie had during his stay there.
