It is unfortunate Hint there are puli tical issues, before the country too large uikl too important to lie postponed until the liquor question is settled. If these issues could he postponed, and the election were fought on the liquor issue, there would he a majority in the House which would give the Prohibition movement its quietus. Most people would he sorry to see the liquor question made the cardinal issue, hut if the Alliance insists upon making it the cardinal issue the anti-Prohibition majority, supported by the very considerable section which favour Prohibition but would not like to see every national interest subordinated to it, would probably respond very vigorously. There is no danger that Prohibition will be carried by popular vote, but there is a risk that Prohibition fanaticism may seriously dislocate the mechanism ol politics, and the threats of the Alliance must be resented by all supporters of representative government—Christchurch “Press.”
