THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
F A IIM KH S ’ l'Y NAX CK . Those who take up land at high values can never make it pay, and disgruntled small tanners will be found everywhere. In their efforts to help the farmer to recover something from its high-priced land the Government is supplying him with rural credit and intermediate rural credit, which looks very much like throwing good money after had. The advances to be made under these schemes will doubtless be generous: that is to say. there is a danger of their lieing more than tho security is worth, and the loss will fall on the taxpayers. There is some scheme to issue debentures to the public on the amount of the advances made by the rural credits department, hut these debentures may not be taken up readily, because the State is not responsible for the security at the back of them. AYe are getting deeper into the mire because our dealings with first principles are wrong. —Wanganui “Herald.”
