A SERIOUS ACCIDENT

MOTOR CYCLES COLLIDE. A serious accident happened last c\ening about 5.10 o’clock at the intersection of Rolleston and Stafford Streets, as a result of which Edward Charles Rooney, of Kanieri, an employee of the Post and Telegraph Office, Hokitika is in AVestland Hospital with his right arm and leg broken, and other injuries. It appears that Rooney was riding a motor cycle on his way homo from work coming from Gibson Quay. On turning into Stafford Street, lie met John I>. Stuart, a son of Air D. Stuart, who was riding a motor cycle also, and who was coming down Stafford Street from the Kanieri mill on his way to his home. Both motor cycles appear to have been travelling at a fair pace. There is a considerable growth of gor.se at the corner of the intersection and this prevented the riders getting a view of each other until there were only a tew feet intervening. Rooney swerved across the road in an attempt to get further out, while Stuart pulled to the left, but his front wheel fit ruck Rooney’s cycle amidships and both cycles and riders came down with a crash, Rooney being seriously injured a.s stated, while Stuart escaped with some bruises, and skin abrasions. Rooney’s cycle was considerably smashed up, while Stuart’s front wheel is badi* buckled. There was no one present to see the smash, except the two participants, but a few moments later a car came along and Rooney was taken to the hospital where he received treatment. On enquiry at the hospital tin’s morning we were informed that Rooney had passed a fair night. The right leg is broken at the thigh, and both bones on the right forearm were broken, both breaks being rather bad ones. There arc no other iniuires of any consequence and his condition otherwise is good.
