TROUBLE AT HAMILTON. PARISHIONER. DISSATISFIED. if s- AUCKLAND, March 21. •i The statement that “there is more feeling over Church affairs in Efarnilj ton to-day than there has been for is years,” was made at a meeting of IIS members of the Church of England in y the Parish Hall at Claudelands last •- night. About 200 persons attemled the •. meeting to discuss a proposal to form t in the diocese of Waikato, a new r parish, including Claudelands, Gordonn ton. a.nd Rialto road, d The chairman (Mr F. G. Hall) said o the Rev. jjj. R.. Waiving could lie se--1 cured as vicar of the proposed parish f without legal difficulty, o Mr Voice objected to the proposal I being '•'foisted” on parishioners. Six e weeks ago, he said, the committee I turned the whole thing down. He f strongly objected to the removal of the e Rev. Mr Rich (Applause). :• Mr Mercer: Are we perfectly satist lied there is not something behind i this? I Mr Voice: The meeting was adver- ? fixed to form a parish. Is that so, or 1 is it a parochial district? > The chairman : Purely a matter for ■ the parishioners. ; “'There is a tremendous financial responsibility about it,” said Air F. A. Snell. “The scheme has the approval of i Ik: Bishop and the Doan. This seems extraordinary, for if we formed a new perish we would eliminate a very strong limb of St. Peter’s. There is a very unsatisfactory state of affairs at the Cathedral at present. (Hear, bear.) In fact there is more feeling over Church affairs in Hamilton to day than there has been for voars. Wo are not at all satisfied with the way things are going on. (Applause). Ihe innovations at St. Peter’s have E'en proved Romish in doctrine and practice, and we must deal with those .disintegrating forces immediately. Otherwise wo shall not have a healthy Church community. We know that whore there is High Church there is stagnation. The Dean was approached and climbed down considerably. Roth the Bishop and the Do an arc I anxious that the feeling in Claudelands sliottld not become general over the diocese.” Ibe ch' irnian said he was not aware 1 that the parishioners of St. Peter’s 1 bad made a single effort to abolish < the “High Church.” : Mr Mercer moved a resolution a[>- \ proving the ideal of forming a parish lor Claudelands and outlying districts, ( but expressing the opinion that the b time was not opportune for such a -top. p “Wo have no facilities for taking I Communion in a simple manner.” said Mr 11. G. Sorgoal. “Personally, T 1 would like to see a church here where t we can worship as wo did when we were boys.’’ ( | Mr Snell: We should do our duty li iini not desert the old Church. “ Many people here want to clean t; op the whole Church from top to hot- 3 tom.” said Mr E. V. Htaeo. Mr Hall said lie was perfectly pro- J pared to assist in doing so if the par- 3 isliioncrs were. Air Arorocr’.s motion was then put li and carried Ly a fair majority and 3 the meeting adjourned. Asked for his opinion on last night’s II meeting at Claudelands, Archbishop 3 A.verill expressed disappointment at the resolution of the meeting, which t lie felt had boon passed hv irrospon- f; sihlo people, some of whom were not connected with the congregation. Claudelands parishioners had missed an opportunity of securing the services of a very efficient clergyman in the Rev. S. R. AVnreing, who would £ have been appointed vicar of the new n parisli. 1;
