The City Council had before it yesterday a recommendation that in view ol tin' general lahotii'ciV recent award calling for increases, which would involve £50(10. and an increase in the general rate, that the finance lie adjusted on the basis of employing few bands, and where reasonable, a tender In- invited for works. It was stated variously that from 25 to 50 men would be affected. After discussion the report was adopted. ASSAULT SENTENCE. CHRISTCHURCH. Alarcli 22. In the Magistrate’s Court to-dav. William James Whitla was sentenced to lourteen days for assaulting porters on the Lyttelton train and two months' hni'il labour for using obscene language in the presence of women. He was also convicted for drunkenness. Alagistrate Lowry said: “Railway officials have a dangerous time without added danger from men like you.” THEFT CHARGE. WAIROA, March 22. In the police court this morning a young man whose name was suppressed. employed as cashier by a local mercantile firm pleaded guilty to stealing £232 7s 8d from his employers. Ihe greater part of the money lias since been repaid. He was committed for sentence to the Supreme Court. MAN AIISSTNG. DUNEDIN. March 22. I-cars are entertained for the safety ol the postal clerk, William John Pyo, a widower, aged 30, who is missing since Friday. Ilis wife died 8 months ago. The missing man is reported 10 have been morose for some time. UNEAIPLOYED TEACHERS. DUNEDIN. March 22. The question of unemployed school teachers was discussed at the Education Board’s Teachers' Institute, urging that smaller classes would relieve unemployment and ensure better training of children. .Mr Horn, ALP. stated that he was informed that some students who finished training in 1920 had not yet been placed. It was stated most workless teachers had only a D certificate which was no use these days. It is said it had been recommended to the training, college that none should he net-served with who hadn’t a reasonable chance of securing better than a D certificate. SCHOOL INSPECTOR'S IMPRESSIONS. 1 DUNEDIN, March 22. .Many of the older pupils seem too - tired or too sleepy to give concentration ] and addition. It would seem that | the school is the place where they come ; to rest. Thus reported Senior School 1 Inspector Stuckey on a school in a j dairying district. Economic forces admittedly had something to do with it. but in cases like ibis the State should intervene. It was resolved to forward the report to the Department, asking lor < legislation forbidding the employment of children before certain hours. I
