(Australian «t N.Z. Cable Association.) DEMANDS BY merchant SERVICE. MELBOURNE, March 19. A case lias commenced in which the Merchant Service Guild of Australasia is claiming increased pay and better conditions for its members on deep sea, bay, harbour and river craft. The claims for the masters range from £43 7s lOd monthly, for passenger vessels of 125 tons and under to £1.‘14 17s 6d monthly for passenger vessels over 10.000 tons. The Guild is also claiming increased salaries for all members from the sixth officei and fifth engineer to the captain and 'chief engineer, in addition to eight hours per day and provision for overtime. WALSH ISLAND DISPUTE. SYDNEY, Milfoil 19The Federal Council of’ the Boilermakers’ Union rejeoted the proposal oif, the Commonwealth Conciliation Commissioner for immediate resumption of work at Walsh Island. U.S. STEEL TRADE. NEW YORK, March 18. ' The annual reports of the Uhited States Bethlehem Steel Corporation Indicate the severity of the depression in the steel industry during 1927, when the total sales of United States steel fell nearly two hundred millions short of 1926. Stock-holders received eight dollars eighty cents per common share compared with 17.99 in 1926. The net , income fell from 134,837,958 dollars to present 105,418,368 dollars, j The Bethlehem Corporation gave five dollars two cents per share, compared with 7.48 in 1926. Their sales totalled 271,502,891 dollars, compared with 304, 361,805' in 1926.
