EVERYBODYS PICTURES, “ STEELE OF THE ROYAI, MOUNTED ” —FRIDAY. There arc only a few novelists whoso stories seem to gain in effectiveness when transferred to the screen. Sabaiini is one, “Captain Blood "in particular proving much more effective on the screen than between the covers of the book. dames Oliver t'unvood is another. The latest Ounvood picture. ".Steele of the nova I Mounted,” will he seen here for the first time on Friday night at the Princess Theatre, ft is a typical Cut-wood photoplay, full of swift action, vivid characterization. and the glamour of lomantic adventure. Tt is in this ability to throw a glorious glamour over his stories that Curwood exercises a magic that puts him in tt class h t v himself. In a day when it might he thought that the saga of the Canadian “motilities” had been sung to death, lie revives it with a fresh vigour that readily comunieates itself to the spectators. The story of "Steele of the Royal Mounted” follows the trail of tlie lone trooper on the track of a criminal through the perils of the wilderness. It is an old theme for picture-goers but as worked out in this production, it seems amazingly fresh and new. The spectators are held breathless in the big scene, where Steele is dashed helplessly down tlie roaring rapids to almost certain death. Bert Lytell, in the role of Steele, clashes through this peril, and others, with a fascinating recklessness that sets the blood tingling. Playing opposite him is the lovely Charlotte Meniam, who makes an adorable heroine. Stuart Holmes gives another of his memorable "villain” performances. -Mabel Julienne Scott, who has emerged from a long retirement, makes her return an event to be welcomed by picture-goers, as a. woman whoso love affair causes a lot of trouble. And Sydney T)e Grey and John Toughney. as a pair of Colonels, complete the principals in an excellent east. Tlie picture was produced by David Smith for Allograph, being released throughout Australasia by Master Pictures, and he has made a stirring, joyous photoplay of it, one ol the season’s best. Further chapters of iho serial and -a good two-reel comedy will also be shown. On Saturday next “Shipwrecked.” Wednesday next:—For The Term of His Natural Life.”
