BOXING.
PURDY MINS LIGHTWEIGHT championship. (Australian <t N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, March 10. At the Stadium, Purdy (9.8)) outpointed Jones (9.62) in the fifteen round contest for the lightweight championship of New Zealand and Australia. Jones attacked aggressively over the early rounds scoring rights to the body. The New Zealander, boxing cleanly, attacked with both bands to head and body, and secured a majority of points until the tenth round, when he appeared to tire. Jones then forced the fighting, winning the next few rounds by a. slight margin of points. Purdy's eye was badly gashed as the result of a collision of heads in the fourteenth, giving Jones an advantage in, the concluding round, but the New Zealander had a, sufficient margin in his favour to win tlio title comfortably. FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MELBOURNE, March 10. At the Stadium, Norm Gillespie defeated Tommy Barker by a knockout in the tenth of a fifteen round contest for the featherweight championship of Australia and New Zealand. Gillespie led throughout, and had no difficulty with his opponent.
