Throe outbreaks of fire in less than twelve hours is a record that has caused quite a. commotion in the town. Luckily the damage done was not of as serious a nature as might have been. The outbreak at Newmans Motors Ltd. was one that might easily have attained very substantial proportions. Luckily the (ire was discovered in time to allow of the salving of the stock of motor cars, while the Brigade were able to make a good save of the building. the outside of which only shows the marks of smoke, though considerable structural damage was done. The Convent outbreak was also luckily soon in an incipient stage. Entries for the events at the gala day next Saturday on Cass Square should now lie lodged with the Hon. Secretary of the Beautifying Society, -Mr J. Niven. There are several competitions for boys and girls, as well a.s entries wanted for the balloon racing. The proceeds from the gala day will he devoted to the improvement fund for Maeandrew and Cass Squares and the Ocean Beach. There should tie wide general support forthcoming for the carnival. Nelson Wright, who is a son of Archdeacon Wright; and a native of Nelson, has held positions at Ashburton and St John’s, Christchurch prior to taking Riccarton where ho has been successful in carrying out the rebuilding of the Church at a- cost of £7.f100. Mr Wright, who is married, is oxpocftd to take up his abode here in May next. Prior to accepting the parish, the Revd.
