TRADE UNION COLOUR BAR. JOHANNESBURG. Jan. 12. Friction seems probable between the white trade unionists of South Africa, and the I.C.U. (Industrial Workers and Commercial Union), a native trade union organisation claiming; to have 100.000 members. A committee representing; white trade unionists recomended the Trades Union Congress not to affiliate the i.C'.U., as it would swamp the Europeans. ! To this the I.C.U. have replied that I they are the real working class of South I Africa, “and as trade unionists we have the right to dominate all trade union councils in which we happen to be in a majority.” The native union points out that it can pay £5,000 a year in affiliation fees and adds that it declines patronage and is determined to get equal status with Whites.
